Update Post (and a giveaway!)

So much has been going on lately, I owe a looong update post. Bear with me: I’m going to try to fit a few weeks worth of exciting happenings into a single post, and keep it as abbreviated as possible. Yeah right, right?! But trust me, read to the end. It’s worth it ;)

Run for the Fallen

The weekend of September 7th and 8th our family attended the 6th Annual Run for the Fallen in Tampa. This is our 4th year attending in honor of The Hubs and wow was it amazing! Each year we have witnessed the event grow exponentially larger and this year over 4,000+ runners/walkers attended in honor of our fallen heroes. Saturday evening there was a motorcycle processional, speakers, and candlelight vigil. And Sunday morning kicked off with a ceremony complete with 21 gun salute, followed by a 1 Mile Walk, 5K run, and 10K run. Little Man said he wanted to run this year so he, Grandpa, and I ran the 5k together. I was so proud of him! He only stopped to walk a few times and only fussed once, when I dumped a cup of  water on his head to cool him down. (But hey, if someone did that to me, I would get angry too!) With Little Man in tow we finished in 39 minutes. Go, tiny runner! :D

Documentary Progress

Something that made this year’s R4F even more special: filming it! That’s right, filming began on the documentary I mentioned here. The awesome Tristan Albrecht of Dedal Films, along with his team on camera and sound, made the trip to Florida to film me at the event. We also spent some time filming interviews, working my way through my life to tell my story. We made great progress in this initial set of footage and Tristan will be returning to Florida in several months to continue filming as the project picks up. We anticipate the release of a trailer for the film (tentatively titled “Warriors”) within the next week. You know I’ll share!

(If you missed the explanation of my project and the documentary, see this video post.)

Memorial Tattoo

On the 4th anniversary of The Hubs death, I finally began work on his memorial tattoo. If you know me you know I love tattoos (I have a lot). The Hubs loved them as well. In fact, getting tattoos together was one of our little things: we averaged about one a year together. So I knew right away that I would one day get a tattoo for him, I just didn’t know what. I had so many ideas but no clue how to combine them all. This, plus the fact that inking a memorial meant permanency, kept me from doing for it a long time…but a few months ago, I knew it was time. One of The Hubs best friends, J, is an incredible artist and helped me dream up the perfect design. The Hubs always wanted J to draw a tattoo for him but he never got the chance, so it was good for both of us I think. I got the outline on the 12th and will return next week to color it in. It’s funny, I’ve always wanted a half-sleeve and The Hubs used to always tell me to do it, it would “be so hot” (lulz). How fitting I am starting it with him…

Gentlemen of the Road

Just a day later, my bestie A and I whisked away for the weekend to a music festival I’ve been looking forward to all year: Gentlemen of the Road! This year one of their Stopovers was in my favorite place: St. Augustine. I love concerts and I love that city, so this was perfection. I mean really: Edward Sharpe + the Magnetic Zeroes, Fun. surprise replacement John Fogarty, Mumford and Sons, lots of other live music, plus historic downtown wandering and drinks and my bestie? That equals an awesome time and the perfect way to get out and live passionately after a difficult anniversary.

As you can see, life has kept me busy lately…in a good way! The timing was most lovely: I finished up the bulk of my work for my last seminar a few days before the Run for the Fallen, so I’ve had adequate time and energy to devote to life’s happenings. Of course, because nothing can be simple, I managed to catch an allergy/cold combo that turned into a slight sinus infection, but I told that mess whose boss. Now I am enjoying two full weeks off before my next seminar starts, woot! Plenty of time to dive head first into the Project, make some headway on the decluttering around this house, and play with a few passions (I just started a weekly watercolor painting class to strengthen my skills, yay.). And perhaps a few naps will work their way in there. I’ll never tell.

In other news, we recently passed the 3 year mark on the blog here, folks. Thank you, all of you, every one of you dear lovely souls, for reading my thoughts and sharing in my feelings and joining me on this journey of life. You make it so special and I love you guys. <3

To share the love, time for a spontaneous giveaway! All you have to do is leave me a comment below and I’ll select one of you (using Random.org) on Tuesday Sep. 24th to receive a $25 gift card to your choice of: Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, SpaFinder, Home Depot, or Publix. Just a small way of thanking you for being a part of my village. See? Reading all of my rambles has it’s perks ;)

I absolutely love that tattoo, and the story behind it makes it even better. I’m so excited about the documentary! That’s awesome.

Its nice to hear that more people come out each year for the run for the fallen. I’m glad there are more people willing to take time out of their busy lives to honor those who deserve the honor!

I’m happy theres a run for the fallen-it reminds people of the sacrifices the vets hvae made
